Robert Powers legacy. No other national school provides a core
program of this kind. This workshop will prepare one for the future
as well as give one the leading edge for today. It is not only
meant for aspiring models and actors. This course can and should

In 1923, a young actor turned model created the first training company
of its kind. The “Powers Girl” was known as the epitome
of poise, posture, sophistication and social grace. Over two million
men and women of all ages are Powers graduates, including legends
like Lauren Bacall, Lucille Ball, Henry Fonda, Ava Gardner, Grace

John
Robert Powers was an actor in New York City in the early 1900s.
One day he overheard an associate say he needed a group of
attractive people to pose for magazine advertisements. That’s
when Mr. Powers’ exceptional entrepreneurial skills
took over: he rounded up acting friends and trained them for
the advertisements. From that informal beginning Powers went
on to found the nation’s first modeling agency in 1923,
and the modern modeling industry was born.

and we are extremely proud of our record. For over 80 years,
we’ve helped our students earn and maintain a competitive
edge over their rivals in the entertainment industry. Famous
Hollywood stars still work with acting coaches because the
best-prepared candidates are the most successful-like JRP

All

fast-paced and constantly changing, and agents and directors
need faces and talent now. These busy professionals vastly
prefer a well-prepared candidate to one who lacks polish,
experience or training.
No. High fashion modeling has
very strict physical requirements, 5’8” and above
for women, 5’11” and above for men, and many otherwise
talented individuals cannot qualify. The fact is that over
80% of John Robert Powers’ students are actors, but
we also work with models, make-up artists, singers and dancers-anyone
who is a part of or preparing to enter the entertainment industry.
No.
We believe that a solid academic foundation should be a young
person’s first priority. JRP’s policy is to work
only with those who strive for academic excellence.
What
time commitment is expected if JRP agrees to work with me?
Students
commit one day per week to development. Auditions or other
opportunities with agents, casting directors or other industry
professionals can occur, but usually just a few times a month.
No. We are looking for people
with a high level of interest and dependability. When our
students meet top industry professionals their conduct is
a direct reflection of our training. Our relationships with
the best agencies and casting directors are excellent because
we are known for presenting only the most talented, enthusiastic
and professional candidates.
I
have heard that if you want to be a model, agencies will pay
everything for you to start. Is this true?
In
any career, training and marketing are an up-front investment
of time and money. The most successful models and talent will
tell you that the learning process never ends. In today’s
fast-paced environment, very few agencies in the world will
front costs necessary to begin a model’s career-there
ARE “discoveries”, but like lottery winners, they
are rare. The vast majority of professionals have to work
for their success.

"You
have to audition for school plays, take acting
lessons, and look for productions in your community",
says Susan Curtis, who manages Hilary Duff, Agnes
Buchner and Mila Kunis, among others. "Don't think
your going to move to L.A. and make it happen."
Kate Bosworth's agent, Billy Lazarus, recommends
sampling a variety of acting classes. "Get your
feet wet in improve, scene study, dance, movement
- everything, " he advices.

There
are always people trying to exploit the gullible,
so be cautious when checking your options. One
rule of thumb: Don't part with cash. Gilbert puts
it simply: "When I sign actors, they don't give
us money until we get them a job.

Since
one of the key elements to success is enjoying
what you do, find creative ways to perform- they
may lead you to your future. "Look, it's hard.
You have to know that you're going to face a lot
of rejection," Gilbert reasons, "but you shouldn't
do it if you're not having fun."

Hollywood Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Described as the award

cinematic achievement in acting and filmmaking. This years 2006 Hollywood

JRP,
I would like to take time to tell you what John Robert
Powers has done for our family.
I have a twelve-year-old daughter who has been attending
training classes at your Seattle school for a little over
a year, and the changes your training has made to my daughters
life is wonderful.
May
was suffering from very low self-esteem, and none existent
self-confidence. These two personality problems occurred
due to the fact that she was not able to read. Since she
was in first grade the schools kept assuring me that she
did not have a reading problem, she was suffering from
maturation and I would see a difference next year. By
the time we reached the fourth grade it was evident that
this was not a maturation problem, so she was re-evaluated.
Her unique needs were recognized, the school modified
her curriculum, and she began to read. The down side is
in the years that she could not read, her self-esteem,
and self-confidence took a beating. My husband, John,
has a cousin who is currently a working model and actress,
so he insisted that ? enroll May into modeling and acting
classes immediately. It was just my luck that no more
than a week later I heard an advertisement on my local
radio station encouraging people to come Seattle and audition
for JRP. I signed May up and she was accepted. I honestly
have to say that I was still very skeptical that this
training was going to make a difference, however John
wanted her to participate. Since attending your school
her teachers have seen a drastic improvement in her self-esteem,
willingness to talk in front of the class and try, even
if she did not get the results she was looking for. I
am so thankful that my husband was so insistent about
the training.
May
has been chosen from many candidates to participate at
the IMTA competition in New York. I am excited to see
her face when she realizes her accomplishment. As far
as John, May, her sister and myself we have already won
the best competition of all. May is growing into a happy
self-confident teenager who can see with her own eyes
that it is O.K. to be an individual and she can achieve
anything she sets her mind to. The other plus is that
her grades are constantly improving every quarter.

After
a nationwide radio talent search, John Robert Powers
selected five winners to attend Walt Disney Pictures'
world premiere
of "Ice
Princess", starring Joan Cusack, Kim Cattrall, and
Michelle Trachtenberg. The film's premiere was held at
the historic
El Capitan Theatre
in Hollywood on March 13th and opens nationwide March 18th.
The five lucky winners were flown to Los Angeles and given
the full Hollywood treatment, complete with a limousine
escort, hotel accommodations, a shopping spree, and full
make-over
before
their star studded arrival on the red carpet for the premiere
of "Ice Princess."
The girls were also given access to the star studded after-party,
where the parking lot of the El Capitan Theatre was transformed
into an ice rink. Attending guests and the film's stars were
able
to show off their own skating skills.

" Reaching"
What
do these people have in common? Michael Jordan, Tony Hawk,
Mary Lou Retton? They all had a dream and they worked hard
to acheive
it, just like I am. Acting is my dream. I have ben given the
opportunity to pursue this dream from John Robert Powers and
I am putting all of my effort
into acheiving it in as many ways as possible.
I have been practicing and using techniques taught to me at John
Robert Powers not only in auditions but in normal everyday situations
as well. I have stopped placing my hands in my pockets, started
keeping eye contact to who ever is speaking to me, and am more
prepared with my answers when I reply. At John Robert Powers,
I am taking a dance class, a commercial skills class and attending
as many auditions as possible.
My attendance has been perfect except for this month where I
missed one commercial skills class and one dance class. All 3
months
before these two incidents
I have had perfect attendance. I do not just practice what I learn
at JRP, but I take my newly acquired learning and put it to use
outside of
JRP. This has proven beneficial to me. Because of this, I have
recently gotten a call
from Julie Wolff of The Morgan Agency congratulating me on an
audition tape I sent in. The Morgan Agency very much liked my
performance and would like to sign me.
In the future I would like to pursue this more with
a possible trip to L.A. in the late summer. I have not just planted
my roots in JRP Acting School, but outside of them as well. I
am looking into enrolling into a fall acting class at Notre Dame
De Namur University. Also, I would like to further my singing
abilities, so I am searching for a voice instructor as well.
In addition,
to hone in on things I can do to gain experience in theater,
I have been looking into a theatrical drama group named "Broadway
by the Bay".
I hope that this will give me the edge I need in tackling all
my inhibitions in performing in front of new people. I hope that
I set an example for all th? students in John Robert Powers in reaching
for and acheiving my goal.
